 Junior Cadet Corps

School Year 2020-2021

East Valley Central

Welcome to the Junior Cadet Corps!  You are now part of an elite organization at East Valley Central.

Purpose:  The Junior Cadet Corps (JCC) was created to engage Middle School students in 5 areas: Character, Heath, Interaction, Service, and Leadership (CHISL), preparing you not only for high school, but for college and beyond. The program does this by preparing you for responsible leadership roles in society while making you aware of your rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens.  In JCC you will develop your citizenship and patriotism, enhance your self-reliance, leadership, and teamwork, develop your thinking and communication skills, and increase your understanding of the importance of physical fitness and good health.  We will work together with the other programs and courses in the school to help you prepare to lead successful lives after you graduate from high school.

There are two JCC courses this year, a yearlong course and a quarterly rotational course.  This is a class unlike any other you will take, from the variety of subjects we teach and your role in planning and carrying out our activities. Our use of military leadership principles, emphasis on hands-on performance, and the high standards we expect in and out of class will constantly challenge you and keep your interest.

This is going to be an exceptional year, we are given a unique experience with doing a hands on course online. I look forward to working with each of you this year.

There is absolutely no military obligation from your participation in JCC!  Our purpose is not to prepare you for military service, but to help prepare you to lead successful lives.

 Uniform:

When we come back into a classroom environment each Cadet will be issued 1ea Gray button-up shirt, 1ea Royal Navy Blue beret, 1ea nametag, and 1ea JCC polo shirt, which will be worn all day on Fridays and is worth 100 points. On uniform day you will wear the proscribed uniform as well as dark pants, and close toed shoes. We will teach you how to properly wear your shirt, care for it, and help you learn to look your best in uniform.  Treat your uniform with respect, wear it with pride, and launder it weekly.

Young men will be required to have a haircut that meets the Junior Cadet Corps standards and reflects well on you. We encourage that hair will be above the ears and collar, will not be bulky on top. Males will also NOT be allowed to have any piercings while in uniform. Young ladies will be required to wear their hair up above the bottom edge of the collar, not have any faddish hairstyles (the only authorized hair colors are natural hair colors), and wear only nail polishes of a neutral color.  Ladies may wear one pair of matched circular studs (no more than 1/4” in diameter) in the ear lobe; they may not wear any other piercings in uniform.

Violations will reduce your overall score for the day.

ALL CADETS ARE EXPECTED TO WEAR THEIR UNIFORM AND MEET PROPER GROOMING STANDARDS.  There is no other way to make up these missed days.

The issued items will need to be turned in at least a week prior to the end of the course because they are school property. Failure to do so will incur a fine for each item not properly returned. A separate sheet will list the cost for each item.

Course Materials:  No books will be issued for this course, all your curriculum will be accessible on your chromebooks. Cadets will need to save all their material on Google Classroom.

Military courtesy:   Each Cadet will be assigned rank on position and responsibility, and the proper customs and courtesies will be observed by all. I will teach you how to perform the duties associated with your position and how to maintain an appropriate relationship with others in the chain of command. You will be taught how to render courtesies to the flag, other cadets, and military personnel.  You will have the opportunity to advance in rank during the school year based on your performance, conduct, participation, and enthusiasm. Any rank received during the year-long course will not be able to be transferred to the JROTC program at the high school.

 Expectations:  We expect you to--

  •         Attend all your scheduled classes on the appropriate day and time
  • Participate in both the online and offline learning environment.
  • While in class, focus on the mission:  learning and becoming better leaders and citizens.
  • Raise your hand when you'd like to speak in class.
  • Follow the rules and guidelines posted in the classroom.
  • Complete your assigned work to the best of your ability, and turn it in on time.
  •  Treat others with dignity, respect and courtesy.
  •  Ask me for help anytime you need it.
  •  Aim to live up to your potential as a citizen in our democracy (to be all you can be).
  •  When we return to in person schooling, bring your chromebooks, paper, and writing materials to class every day, be on time, and come prepared to learn.

You can expect me to--

  • Set high standards, and help you achieve them.
  • Treat you with respect.
  • Be available to help you whenever you need it.

 Co-curricular Activities

When we return to school you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of JROTC activities. We will be establishing a color guard and a drill team to participate in selected activities as designated by the middle school (assemblies, sporting and community events, etc.).  When you become a member of these teams you are also accept the responsibility to attend practices and maintain satisfactory grades and attendance in all your courses.  Whether you participate in these and other activities depends on you--your academic performance, attendance, conduct, and citizenship. We will discuss team participation during an in-depth parent meeting.

Community Service and Service Learning Projects: There are not scheduled Community Service or Service Learning projects at this time. The High School Red Devil Battalion has a rich tradition of service to our school and community, and as soon as we are able to serve the community again we will do so.

Mandatory activities:  There are no mandatory activities at this time, but this may change.

Awards and Discipline:  As a JCC Cadet, you will earn awards and ribbons for superior performance.  These awards are designed to be worn on your uniform and will need to be returned unless otherwise directed.

Grades:  You will earn your grade in JCC based on your performance in the following areas:

          Tests and quizzes . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . Approximately 30%

(Chapter tests, the final exam, and weekly quizzes.)

         Classroom participation .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . .  . . . . .  Approximately 40%

(The quality of your participation in class discussion and other learning activities.)

Extra Credit .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . .  Approximately 10%

(For participating in any co-curricular activity outside of regular school time)

You will earn your final letter grade based on the following scale:

80% to 89%:          B

70% to 79%:          C

60% to 69%:          D

Less than 60%:    F

Your weekly grade breakdown will be:

Overall Grade: Your overall participation grade will be determined by how you do in the above categories.  Everything we will do this school year is designed for you to excel. If you are not wearing your uniform on a consistent basis, not participating in class, and not attending the mandatory activities you will not meet the standard.

Late Assignments:   Turn in your assignments on time!  You can earn a score no higher than 80% on assignments that are turned in after the due date.

Attendance:  Daily attendance in class is absolutely essential to your success in JCC.  The majority of our work consists of discussion, hands on exercises, and cooperative learning, and you cannot benefit from this work when you are not in class.  You will not receive full credit on any assignments missed because of an unexcused absence.

Make-ups:  When you are absent, you should check with us or a reliable classmate to find out what you missed.  You should turn in assignments due while you were out within two days after your return. Coordinate missed exams and quizzes with me individually.

I understand that students learn in different ways, therefore I do my best to vary my teaching methods in order to best meet the needs of all students.  In the rubric above, you can see how much interaction with other Cadets plays a huge role in JCC.

Final notes:

When we return to the classroom, physical activity will be taking place at my discretion. This may include, but not limited to, push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, and will not exceed 10 repetitions in one setting. These types of activities will be used to reinforce listening skills and to correct inappropriate behavior (inattentiveness/ignoring the teacher, talking during instruction, swearing, etc…). If inappropriate behaviors persist I will then refer them to In School Suspension (ISS).
